How to Get to Malang?

Malang is the second largest city in East-Java province of Indonesia, after Surabaya (the capital city of East-Java Province). It is located 85 km from Surabaya, about 300 km from Denpasar (Bali) and 785 km from Jakarta (the capital city of Indonesia).  Malang has an airport that is served by several domestic flights from cities in Indonesia primarily Jakarta. However, there is no direct international flight to Malang. Therefore, you may have to choose one of the following routes:

When you arrive at Juanda Airport Surabaya, you may choose one of the following public transportation to continue your journey to Malang.

 

From Juanda Airport Surabaya – Malang:

A number of minibuses operated by travel agents are ready in the airport to serve passengers traveling to Malang from Juanda Airport in Surabaya. You will find them offering “Malang” to potential passengers in the arrival zone of the airport.  The cost of travel ranges between IDR 70.000 – IDR 120.000, depending on your destination in Malang. You will normally travel with 3-6 other passengers in one minibus. Therefore, you may have to wait until the number of passengers is sufficient to cover the travel’s expenses. It takes 3-4 hours’ journey from Juanda Airport (at the south part of Surabaya) heading to the South to Malang, depending on the traffic jam.  If you arrive during weekend, it may take longer than 4 hours.  Like a taxi, you will be dropped off at your destination. You may be dropped off first, second or last depending on the destination of each passenger in the minibus in several locations in Malang.

Unless you are in a hurry or travel in a group, we do not recommend taxi, because the travel cost will be very expensive ranging between IDR 400.000 – IDR 500.000.

From Juanda Airport Surabaya – Malang by bus

Juanda Airport Surabaya is not equipped with train station or inter-city bus station nearby.  If you would like to take a bus, you need to catch DAMRI bus from the airport to get to Bungurasih bus station, and take a bus to Malang. There are frequent buses to Malang from Bungurasih bus station ranging from economic air conditioned buses with frequent stops (travel cost IDR 14.000) and PATAS air conditioned buses which stop in major cities (travel cost IDR 25.000).

You need to get off at Arjosari bus station in Malang, and continue with a taxi (travel cost IDR 50.000), UBER TAXI via UBER Apps, GRAB CAR via GRAB Apps, and GO-CAR via GOJEK Apps or other public transports so called “angkot” with blue color and route AL or ADL (travel cost IDR 4.000), to get to your destination in the city.

2. by Bus

For national delegates who like to travel by bus, there are frequent buses from cities in Java or within East Java province to Arjosari bus station. Inter-city buses ranging from economic air conditioned buses with frequent stops and PATAS air conditioned buses which stop in major cities only.

3. by Train

For national delegates who like to travel by train, there are scheduled trains from major cities in Java (Jakarta, Cilegon, Jogjakarta, Purwokerto, Klaten, Solo, Madiun) to Malang train station. Inter-city trains with long-distance journey, offer business and executive class services.
